on a zoom meeting like any other, there was a poster on the wall behind the a designer I work with. lots of small words littered the page, inscrutable from the small tile on the screen. the poster’s typography stepped over itself, purposely messy, irreverent and disfluent.
“what is it?” i asked.
“It’s Corita Kent’s Rules. She was a nun / teacher at an art college in California that wrote a set of rules for her students. there are 10 of them… for example: as a student you have to get the most out of your teacher but also as a teacher you have to get the most out of your student.
rule 4 is to consider everything an experiment
rule 6 is that nothing is a mistake. there’s no win and no fail. there’s only make.
rule 7 is that the only rule is work.
rule 9 is that you should be happy whenever you can manage it. enjoy yourself. it’s lighter than you think”
…
the full list is wonderful.
